And Justice for All (1988) from Elektra Records. As a song, "Harvester of Sorrow" stands out then as well as now as one of the "slowest" songs Metallica has ever recorded. It tells the story of a man who, throughout his life, has remained traumatized by the abuse he suffered as a child and is now slowly descending into madness as a result of that trauma. As it closes, the song hints that this cycle will continue and possibly even grow far worse, with the suggestion that the song's subject plans to murder his family. With its focus on the always relevant topic of domestic violence and abuse while highlighting the effects that trauma can have on someone as they grow older, Metallica's "Harvester of Sorrow" remains an enduring work and a hallmark of the legendary band. And McFarlane Toys' METALLICA series proves to be more than a catchy name; it's a well-chosen series that does its own part to bring attention to the cause first championed by the band so many years ago.
